چکیده

For some time cognitive anthropology, and indeed cognitive science generally, hove been concerned with issues of conceptual representation. tnadequocies in classical ond more recent approaches, in particular. prototype theories, hove motivated a scorch for alternative accounts. We propose an approach to conceptuol representation thot requires the specification of domain theories, from which conceptual definitions are generated, and within which the relations among concepts can be formalized. We demonstrate the utility of a formal charocterizotion of this view of domains and concepts in the analysis of an aspect of the basic metaphysics constructed by the people of West Futuno, Vanuatu. In the process, we expond the set of formal devices traditionally relied upon by onthropologists and others involved in cognitive studies, and thereby gain insight into the complexity of the metaphysical beliefs of an Oceanic people.

The Paradox of Intervening in Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

This commentary addresses two points raised by Kitson and colleagues’ article. First, increasing interest in applying the Complexity Theory lens in healthcare needs further systematic work to create some commonality between concepts used. Second, our need to adopt a better understanding of how these systems organise so we can change the systems overall behaviour, creates a paradox. We seek to m...

From Linear to Complicated to Complex; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

Attention to collaborative approaches to encouraging evidence use in healthcare practice are gaining traction. The inherent complexities in collaborative and networked approaches to knowledge translation (KT) have been embraced by Kitson and colleagues in their complexity network model. In this commentary, the potential of complexity as presented by Kitson et al within their model is considered...

Connections, Communication and Collaboration in Healthcare’s Complex Adaptive Systems; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

A more sophisticated understanding of the unpredictable, disorderly and unstable aspects of healthcare organisations is developing in the knowledge translation (KT) literature. In an article published in this journal, Kitson et al introduced a new model for KT in healthcare based on complexity theory. The Knowledge Translation Complexity Network Model (KTCNM) provides a fresh perspective by mak...

A review of agent-based modeling (ABM) concepts and some of its main applications in management science

We live in a very complex world where we face complex phenomena such as social norms and new technologies. To deal with such phenomena, social scientists often use reductionism approach where they reduce them to some lower-lever variables and model the relationships among them through a scheme of equations. This approach that is called equation based modeling (EBM) has some basic weaknesses in ...

Using Complexity to Simplify Knowledge Translation; Comment on “Using Complexity and Network Concepts to Inform Healthcare Knowledge Translation”

Putting health theories, research and knowledge into practice is a challenge referred to as the knowledge-toaction gap. Knowledge translation (KT), and its related concepts of knowledge mobilization, implementation science and research impact, emerged to mitigate this gap. While the social interaction view of KT has gained currency, scholars have not easily made a link between KT and the concep...

EPISTEMOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS IN THE CONCEPT OF “EAST” AND “WEST” (WITH REFERENCE TO PRINCIPLES THAT FORM CULTURE)

Do the words “East” and “West” mean more than just geographical orientations or areas? This seems to be a simple question, which cannot be answered easily. The difficulty in answering such a question seems to be rooted in questions that deal with universal concepts. Defining such universal concepts, which seems quite simple, is very difficult indeed - perhaps even impossible in some cases. “E...
